Book Review. Finally, the big fat reading comes to a closure. Raja Raja Chola is claimed to be the greatest of all the Chola Kings and the history portrays him as the matchless warrior, compassionate ruler, fierce lover, passionate shaivite and a great man born with a unique horoscope to succeed in all the dimensions. Based upon historical facts and references the author describes the then prevalent culture of the Chola Period under Raja Raja to AD which is termed as the golden age of the Tamil Land. The author brilliantly shows, how the Cholas played an important role in shaping up the Tamil culture and the Tamil language, thereby establishing a defined societal structure, enforcing a genuine law and order and flourishing the beliefs on Shaivism on top of Vishnavism and Buddhism.

Its not often you find a book that makes you deep involved with itself so much that it makes you forget your food and curse your body when it wants to take even a short break. I really went through this horryfying experience of continued reading for straight 18 hours, took a short nap and then started back again.
Such is the narration that you hardly feel you are in this world. It's not a simple task to extract water f The book, that really made my cheeks wet - many times for which I'm happy too. It's not a simple task to extract water from air - such is the author's ability to build a 6 volume book just out of a single line - "The construction of Brihadeeswara Temple".
I simply still cant digest the fact that the story-line is very simple but ran for thousands of pages. Even if it were for a person who would have stayed besides Raja Raja - he would never have written such volumes about the great King's daily experience during the temple's construction.
And many a times, you would surely earn why couldn't you have lived probably yes during the King's era. That would make you sob many a times for having missed a "greater-than-life" opportunity. It's not about the King itself rather its about the society and people as a whole that will moist your eyes.
Such a wonderful journey was the reading of this book. View 1 comment. Aug 17, Prithiviraj Muthumanickam rated it really liked it. This is the book for it.. Mar 18, Manivannan Venkatasubbu rated it it was amazing.
Such a Divine experience. I would consider this as a conceptual sequel to the Kalki's epic novel Ponniyin Selvan. As it is said in the prologue by Balakumaran, it is not written by a mere human for such a divine work cannot be written with human hands and soul. How he built the Thanjavur's Brahadeeshwara temple is the epicenter through which the surrounding political tremors, agitations and conque Such a Divine experience.
How he built the Thanjavur's Brahadeeshwara temple is the epicenter through which the surrounding political tremors, agitations and conquests and how people shed their lives for one country were all vividly captured in the novel.
Balakumaran has once again proved his prowess in his writings by rendering this state of the art book. No wonder, this would be a helm, a feather in his cap and an all time hit to this erstwhile writer. View 2 comments. Shelves: tamil-fiction.
Phew what a breath taking novel. Mostly dealing on people personality and how things get perceived from each people stands. When I read ponniyin selvan I could not appreciate the creativity of Kalki since I felt most of it to be historical facts.
But on reading this book I get to know the strength of creativity of both kalki and balakumaran. The book makes me time travel and brings me the experience of having lived during the period. The novel starts with the main plot and one can very well unde Phew what a breath taking novel.
The novel starts with the main plot and one can very well understand that all six parts are going to be about raja raja cholan building big temple of tanjore. But how much difficulty king would have faced not many would have thought through, the thought itself is worth great appreciation. The novel is very different in portraying the politics within family in thoughts and deeds, it also gives importance to other sides of life eg.
But atlast what stands out is the planning and thought process of just starting work on temple. If just the beginning requires so much thoughts, what would it have taken to continue and finish it.
Of course balakumaran sir has done the difficult part of writing it out in six other books but I cant wait to read all six to know the answer. But I dont want the short answer too since I would want to travel and submerge in the period through other parts. What a dilemma Thanks bharathan for making me get interested into this book and prabhu for lending me the book Expertly written historical fiction.
For instance, the characters of Uthama Cholan and Sembian Madhevi were totally different from the way it was portrayed in Ponniyin Selvan. I think when writing a historical fiction with based on the real events it is better to avoid such things to give more credit to the book.
But still the plot is so interesting and make you stick to the book.. May 31, Vignesh added it. Eager to move on to Baagam 2. Sep 06, Karthik Vivekanandhan rated it it was amazing Shelves: all-time-fav , historial-fictions , indian-books , it-stays-with-you.
How does one review a book which is so difficult to describe? I have just finished all the 6 parts of the book,it took me more than 3 months to complete and now I want to start all over again. People like you and me, just some centuries apart. The devastation that he felt when his daughter runs off and converts to Buddhism and the steps he takes to make sure that his citizens never hurt the Buddhists monks and then his master stroke to make sure none of his beloved people convert to Buddhism all these make such a interesting read Despite the people's differences during that time, what every character has in common is that their lives all intersect at the focal point of this one great TEMPLE.
And my, what a construction project it was to built the Big Temple of Tanjore! Balakumaran really studied up on this subject and did a fantastic job depicting the grandeur and openness of Brihadeeswarar Temple. Chola Temples really are complicated works of architecture were incredibly expensive and a huge pain to build.
The type of vimana which is ft 66 m high and is still among the tallest of its kind in the world and is really a sight to behold, even in modern standards, with their intricacy and careful architectural balancing. Some of Balakumaran's best writing emerges when he describes how the vimana could have been built, an innovation thought which was structurally impossible at that time. Udaiyar will be my favorite books all the time Aug 20, Arulselvan rated it really liked it.
The plot is set in Rajaraja Chola's period, who has been in power for around 16 years after Uttama chola. The story revolves around Rajaraja's ambitious and visionary plan to build a big temple for Lord Shiva.
