The Velvet Promise is about the Montgomery brothers, 4 in total, and I can see from the way they were characterized I will want to read all of their stories. Gavin the oldest Montgomery, he f. Gavin the oldest Montgomery, he feels he is in love with the manipulative Alice, daughter of a poor drunken baron. She wants to marry for money, which the Montgomery's are lacking due to some past political turmoil, so she strings along Gavin for the good hard sex and marries an abusive Earl for his lands and riches.
Gavin then marries Judith a wealthy heiress who he thinks is going to be hideous, but once he sees her he is awestruck by her beauty. Judith is pleasantly surprised by her handsome groom as well.
Alice is green with envy and plots and destroys over and over to ruin Gavin and Judith happiness. Lots of deceit and jealousy throughout the book with many cruel villains and lots of conflicts to overcome.
I loved both the H and h, their chemistry was sizzling, they couldn't get enough of each other even when they hated one another. There was also several secondary romances throughout the book that were a positive bonus. Already started Highland Velvet- great so far! Goodreads helps you keep track of books you want to read.

This book was too heavy for me!!! He fails to recognize the evil in the bitch and totally mistreats the heroine, his wife, because of said slut. The heroine just wants his love and approval, which he constantly denies. She is physically and psychologically abused.
She ends up pregnant and risks her life and the life of her unborn child to save him, going to the house of som This book was too heavy for me!!! She ends up pregnant and risks her life and the life of her unborn child to save him, going to the house of some psycho weirdo that holds him hostage. The hero thinks that the heroine and the weirdo are lovers and that the child she is carrying is not his.
He treats her badly, once again but as he desires her body, that's ok. Then, I don't know why, he decides that he loves his wife and doesn't care about the blonde slut. Blonde slut plots to destroy the poor heroine and she ends up losing her unborn child! At this point, I'm completely out of my mind!
Were I the heroine, I would happily impale the sucker and beat the blonde bitch until her face was goo! View all 29 comments. Make that a pile of bricks. Strike three: Hero is stupid enough to be drunk and caught in bed with Alice a trap set up by her , heroine sees it and that causes her to lose their child. Like, WTF????????????? After that, nothing Gavin says or does could redeem him in my eyes. Of course, I am leaving out a lot of details — smaller, minor ones where he treats Judith like shit until the end of the book. These kind of bodice rippers may have appealed to me in the past, but now this book was simply atrocious to read.
The series as a whole is fantastic; it's just too bad that in order to read the other brothers' books, you need to suffer through Gavin's assholery. I want to make it clear that I rarely give out 1 star ratings. When I do, it means the book struck a deep nerve in me, pissed me off to the infinite degree, and makes me believe that no amount of groveling or sweet talk can redeem a character.
Thanks Camaro for re-reading this book with me!! View all 47 comments. Jul 03, Megzy rated it did not like it Shelves: georgian-or-regency-era , unfinished-and-likely-to-remain-so , physical-and-emotional-abuse. I refuse to finish reading ANY story that involves rape, abuse, or involuntary sexual servitude by the "so called hero" as an erotic act. Even if you have a physical reaction to the abuse, the emotional damage that results is something you never get over.
You do not fall in love with your rapist, and you certainly cannot have a healthy relationship with your rapist, and suggesting otherwise is demeaning to sexual abuse victims AND irresponsible.

Gavin Montgomery should be tied to two tons of bricks and dropped off a very high cliff. View all 20 comments. It kept me engaged.
I didn't skim, etc. I have a tendency to do this when a character or plot point irks me so bad I can't see the bigger picture. Maybe I should wait a week before writing my reviews. Part of me feels like I should give it a 4, because the writing is certainly far superior to other things I've given 3's to.
But in the last few chapters the hero lost the book that extra gold star. From some of the reviews I've read, I expected to have problems with the hero because he was violent. Actually in the world of medieval romance, I didn't find him too bad.
Granted, not a great start to a relationship, but he didn't seem to get any sadistic enjoyment from hurting her. After that he wants her willing and doesn't rape or hit her again.
He acts like a class A jerk a lot of the time because he's very jealous Judith is extremely beautiful and every man who sees her wants her. That's rather par for the course though in many romances. My problem was his attitude when it came to that crazy ex-lover of his that everyone but him could see through.
It was because of that witch that their wedding night went awry. He was thrilled when he saw how beautiful Judith was and they were both making googly eyes at each other until Alice the ex turns up and cries crocodile tears while attempting a fake suicide. Judith witnesses this and is understandably not happy to hear her brand new husband swearing undying love to another woman on their wedding day.
Gavin handles this by slapping Judith for daring to be angry and say something unkind about the sweet homewrecker Alice.
