JOHN CACIOPPO LONELINESS PDF

Imagine too that in industrialised countries around a third of people are affected by this condition, with one person in 12 affected severely, and that these proportions are increasing. Income, education, sex, and ethnicity are not protective, and the condition is contagious. The effects of the condition are not attributable to some peculiarity of the character of a subset of individuals, they are a result of the condition affecting ordinary people. Such a condition exists—loneliness.

An edited transcript of our conversation follows. John Cacioppo : When you look across studies, you get levels anywhere from 25 to 48 percent [of people reporting being lonely]. When we look at that survey, it looks like loneliness is around 27, 28 percent. Is that just that people are getting older, and older people tend to live alone?
