There is always some issue that arises and needs to be resolved. His wife is getting dressed in the bathroom. Angered he throws all his shoes on the bed and demands the shoeshine clean them all. He does. Their short marriage is over. Juan is a wreck. The story continues years later. He makes a living playing the accordion all around town. His friends are a street artist and a hunchback guy who sells lottery tickets. He has lost everything. A chance encounter leads Juan to discover Norma works for an agency as a socio-linguist, working towards establishing Catalan in the region.
Hence the title of the book, the lover speaks both Catalan and Spanish. And there is a big dose of Catalan in the book too but one gets the gyst by context. The story covers the s to s the book was published in and issues of language were pervasive in this region.
Wow, fastward to today and the Catalan independence leader is charged as a traitor. But I digress. Juan, under a false name, asks Norma for some signage to be translated.
She helps him over the phone and Juan is ecstatic. This is where things get interesting. With an eye patch and some facial effects he becomes Faneca, an old friend claiming to have information on her old husband Juan. To pull off the rise, he even takes up a room in his old neighbourhood where they both grew up. The new Faneca is fondly remembered by the aging landlady of the pensione.
Juan is not fondly remembered. Enter Carmen, her something granddaughter. She is blind and the Faneca becomes fond of her. The ruse is working. Maybe too well. The Faneca passes over to Norma four notebooks about the past life of Juan.
In these notebooks we learn how young Juan first learned his deceitful tricks. Norma is surprised that she knew so little of Juan when she was married to him. But attractions happen. And things happen not as expected for the old Juan; the new Faneca. Hmmm perhaps Juan got what he deserved when Norma walked out? The ending makes me wonder if this was based on a true story, or one of those urban myths that show up in cities?
Irregardless, it was one enjoyable story. View 1 comment. Jan 07, Rafa rated it it was amazing. May 04, Zaparenko rated it it was amazing. The story of a guy whose wife runs out on him, and then he becomes an alcoholic, and then makes himself feel better by disguising himself and seducing women, including his former wife.
Don't recommend it, although it's fairly "well-written," as far as that goes. I had to read it for class. It's dirty. Don't bother. Sep 12, Josefa Wann rated it it was amazing. Very interesting book written in 3 languages, Spanish Castilian, Catala, and Charnego, I'd love to read it in English to see how they translate Charnego not so much a language as an accent. As in some of his other books, reading them transports me to my youth.
I am very familiar with the settings and the characters. Really enjoyed it. Jun 29, Sarah rated it it was amazing. Sep 28, Ali rated it liked it. Read this while in Spain, difficult for a non-native speaker especially the parts in Catalan.
